Sexual orientation and gender identity
Sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI)
In June 2011, the Human Rights Council of the United Nation adopted a resolution (A/HRC/17/L.9/Rev.1) for the first time that addresses the end of discrimination and related human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
On October 10, 2017 on the basis of the protection of sexual identity as an expression of personal rights and the ban on discrimination in the German Basic Law, the Federal Constitutional Court ruled that persons who neither permanently identify (or can be identified) as male or female are eligible to have a positive gender option entered in their civil status. As a result, the legislator introduced the option of entering “diverse” (Section 22 (3) Civil Status Act (Personenstandgesetz, PStG)) alongside the existing options of “female” and “male” for gender as well as leaving it blank in the Civil Status Act.
Diversity management at FAU would like to increase the visibility of the social and individual significance of this issue and provide information and raise awareness within the University.
Following on from the diversity audit “Vielfalt gestalten”, (2016-2018) and in cooperation with the Students’ Representatives and with the support of the Executive Board, a rainbow flag is hoisted on 17 May each year at the main University buildings for the annual IDAHOBIT day (international day against homophobia, biphobia, intersexism and transphobia), and thanks to the efforts of student representatives, FAU now officially takes part in the Christopher Street Day in Nuremberg (CSD).
Further initiatives and measures:
At FAU, trans*, transgender and transsexual students can change their name and title provisionally for internal university purposes even before a change of name or status is approved by a court. More information is available on the FAU website.
All-gender toilets are a means of recognizing a person’s right to personal freedom in terms of their gender, counteracting discrimination based on gender or gender identity and increasing the acceptance of diversity in society.
